Cakie McCall is the ongoing creative practice of Casey Hefferon. It began as a way to explore what happens when play is given more space in the creative process. I’ve always been drawn to experimentation, working across drawing, painting, and mixed media. With a background in fashion design, I wanted to find a way to bring these worlds together.
Jersey became the foundation for this exploration, drawn to its ability to move, distort, and be playfully manipulated while still feeling wearable and comforting. We all reach for a T-shirt or joggers when we want to feel relaxed and at ease. I’m interested in shifting that familiarity into something more expressive, considered, and quietly powerful. Not typical casual wear, but pieces that still hold that same intention.
Alongside garments, the idea of play sits at the centre of my practice. Sketching, painting, printmaking, and object-making are not separate from the clothing, but inform it. They are where ideas are tested and where trial and error unfolds. This exchange between image and garment allows the work to evolve organically, forming an archive of pieces that exist across clothing, prints, and objects.
Rather than rushing towards a final outcome, I work through collecting, testing, and producing in abundance, embracing trial and error and allowing curiosity to lead. Each piece forms part of an evolving exploration of emotion, material, and movement, an artistic approach to fashion that values process as deeply as the final form.
